GJ Center Closure

Colorado, along with many other states across the nation, is being forced to make difficult decisions on cuts to the state budget.

While Republicans have been warning for years that state spending was getting out of control, majority Democrats refused to listen and now we are dealing with the fallout.

I support sensible cuts to the state budget that reflects the same difficult decisions that Colorado families have been making. However, that does not mean that we should balance this budget on the backs society’s most vulnerable population. I am specifically speaking to the governor’s plan to close the skilled-nursing facility at the Grand Junction Regional Center.

Closing the facility will displace 32 people who call the center home. To these 32 people, this budget cut represents the loss of the care they require, the loss of their home, and the loss of stability in their lives.

I have visited with the staff and residents of the facility who tell me that they have no idea where the residents will end up and where they will be able to get the care they need.

I have written the governor to ask for an extension or even an altogether halt of the closure. Although I have not yet received a response, I can assure you that I will continue to fight against this poorly conceived and reckless closure.
